So the young lad, at the young age of near 12, is inducted into the rigorous training of the Saracen warrior, his destiny, to become a Faris… or Saracen Knight.
The training of the Faris especially concentrates with the soldierly arts and equestrianism. The training is considered a concept and a noble art that included the arts of war and hunting, equestrianism, tactics and strategy, and intellect studies.
There were five basic categories of study: horsemanship, (including the veterinary aspects of proper care for the horse and the proper riding techniques), archery, charging with the lance, swordsmanship and intellect. They are also trained in the use of various weapons such as the saif (sword), spear, lance, javelin, club, bow and arrows, and tabarzin or axe, then in wrestling. Their soldierly art skills are to be honed first on foot and then perfected when mounted. Lastly is the intellect study on "the continuing ethos of manly endeavor", a means of a warrior code for the Faris (comparable to the notion of chivalry, which will be accomplished when Arthur becomes King).
Besides the Faris, the Sarenkoi is composed of swordsmen, lancers, and archers. In warfare, it was their responsibility and purpose was to slay the warriors of the opposing army to undermine its soldiers' morale. They would typically begin battle with its soldiers first equipping their armor, assembling their units to their positions and lastly dispatching the fighters, who launch its general advance… and the Faris would circumvent the main force and attack the flanks in bursts, attacking and retreating only to attack elsewhere and retreat again.
